It's not yet clear exactly what path Hagupit will take.

Some forecasts have it on a similar path to Haiyan, crashing into the region around Tacloban over the weekend. Others suggest it may turn sharply to the right before it reaches land and then move north, up the eastern seaboard of the Philippines.Forecasters said Thursday that Typhoon Hagupit, which was packing sustained winds of 195 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 230 km/h, may hit Eastern Samar province on Saturday and barrel inland along the same route, where Haiyan levelled entire villages and left more than 7,300 dead and missing in November last year. 

Haiyan survivor Roge Agujero says the parallels are deeply unsettling. 

"I'm more than nervous because I have experienced what Yolanda brought," 23-year-old Agujero said, using the Filipino name for Haiyan. "I don't know what will happen next after another super typhoon."

 A total of 21 areas have been placed under storm signals as Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) sustained its path toward the Philippines, according to state weather agency PAGASA.

The following areas have been placed under Storm Signal No. 2: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Island, and Siargao Island.

Signal No. 1 is raised over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao Island, Cebu City, Northern Cebu, Bantayan Island, Camotes Island, Bohol, Surigao del Sur, Camiguin Island, and Agusan del Norte.

Ruby slowed down to 15 kilometers per hour while keeping its sustained near-center winds of 205 kph and gusts of up to 240 kph, PAGASA said in its 11:00 p.m. weather bulletin Thursday.

PAGASA expects the typhoon to be 270 kms. east of Borongan, Eastern Samar before making landfall somewhere in the Eastern Samar-Northern Samar Area on Saturday evening.

JTWC track

But the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) continued to forecast a different track for the typhoon.

According to the latest JTWC latest bulletin, the typhoon is expected to make landfall in Samar — similar to the PAGASA forecast — but still forecasts the typhoon to track toward Metro Manila on the way out of the Philippines.

THE TYPHOON WITH INTERNATIONAL NAME “HAGUPIT” IS EXPECTED TO ENTER THE PHILIPPINE AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (PAR) THIS EARLY MORNING AND WILL BE GIVEN A LOCAL NAME “RUBY”. Location of eye/center: At 5:00 AM today, the center of Typhoon “HAGUPIT” was located based on all available data at 1,108 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (8.8°N, 136.4°E). Strength: Maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph Movement: Forecast to move West Northwest at 25 kph. Forecast Positions: Typhoon “HAGUPIT” is expected to be at 598 km East Southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar tomorrow evening and at 219 km East of Guiuan, Eastern Samar by Friday evening. By Saturday evening, it is expected to be in the vicinity of Borongan Eastern Samar. •Estimated rainfall amount is from 7.5 – 20 mm per hour (heavy – intense) within the 600 km diameter of the typhoon. •“HAGUPIT” is too far to affect any part of the country but it is expected to enhance northeasterly winds over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Central Luzon resulting to rough to very rough sea conditions over the aforementioned areas. Fisherfolks and those using small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the said seaboards. •The public and the disaster risk reduction and management council concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11 AM tomorrow.
